Loyal Till Death: Indians and the Northwest Rebellion
Published in Paperback by Fifth House (June, 1997)
Authors: Blair Stonechild and W. A. Waiser
Average review score:

Native Indian involvemement in the Northwest Rebellion
A complelling account of the Indian participation (or lack of it) in the Northwest Rebellion led by the Metis leader, Louis Riel.

The account demonstrates how the Indians entered into treaties with the crown (Queen Victoria) only to have the promises broken by regional Indian Agents and administrators with the full support of the government of the day in Ottawa.

It goes on to show that Indian involvement in the uprising was exaggerated. Much of the participation was under duress from the agents of Riel. After the rebellion was quashed, the Metis participants either fled to escape prosecution, or for the most part, received relatively light sentences.

The Indian leaders who were alleged to have participated were treated harshly, sometimes by officials in a direct conflict of interest due to their own involvement.

In retrospect, it give a better appreciation of the issues present aboriginal Canadians are still wrestling with. A good read, but I could have read on.

Masks of Mexico: Tigers, Devils, and the Dance of Life
Published in Hardcover by Museum of New Mexico Pr (June, 1999)
Authors: Barbara Mauldin, Ruth D. Lechuga, and Blair Clark
Average review score:

An attractive and valuable new reference on Mexican masks.
The author assigned herself the task of publishing a representative sample of masks from the many Mexican states with strong traditions of mask use, drawing from the previously underdisplayed collections of the Museum of International Folk Art, in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

The book brings together a number of interesting photographs of masked dancers, to augment the excellent mask photos. Some of these have appeared in other books on Mexican masking, accessible or inaccessible, others are fresh and new, to the reviewer at least.

In terms of the actual masks, a number of these are rather old, attractive or uncommon, rarely seen or described in books or exhibits; some others are not so old or rare, but nevertheless very interesting. A minority of others are familiar from other standard reference works, and add little to this volume. Their inclusion follows from the goal to present the broad spectrum of Mexican masking.

On the other hand, there appear to be virtually no decorative masks among all those illustrated, which is a credit to the excellent scholarship of the author. Indeed, she has taken great care to identify the carvers, the towns, the estimated age, and the indigenous traditions of each mask, to the extent that this could be documented. The estimated ages are refreshing in their modesty, in contrast to the florid attribution of great age to any demonstrable wear, that one so commonly encounters in books about masks.

In the end, a book about Mexican dance masks must rise or fall on the strength of the material and the quality of the photographs; from this perspective the book is a must buy for any Mexican mask collector or aficionado.

New Times In The Old South
12/18/02 Marilyn Schwartz"Southern Belle Primer".."Why Princess Margaret could Never Be a Phi Kappa Gamma" was readed 1st by me when Philadelphia had a 'rent a audio" store in its 17th & Chestnut Street area in its Center City..The audio was hilarious...I proceeded to borrow the book when at a library and borrowed "New Times In the Old South" a few years ago.."New Times In The Old South" makes me(even as a Northerner) a little bit sad after reading about the traditions in "Southern Bele Primer"....It shows what happens when someone opens the door to those without your attitudes/values and they have even worse than "influences"..just 'plain old money' as their ticket in(at least with influences they'd have to behave a little to spare their sponsors from embarassment).and how these non-southerners with 'stacks of cash" ,just for the fun of it violated the Southern traditions with gaudy extravaganza. Both books by Schwartz will leave you wanting more (They have catchy titles..'Princess Margaret's name' is what made "Southern Belle Primer" catch my interest..and they are really very small size books..hardback,the size of a paperback with 1/2 the pages of the average paperback(e.g.[printed in the USA]: Kensington Publication Corp.'s Zebra Books "Texas Lovestorm" by Linda Windsor(ISBN0821735497) has 381 pages

Predator Calling With Gerry Blair: The Definitive Book Dealing With Distress Screaming to Bring Predators and Other Wild Things Close to the Eye, the Gun, or the Camera
Published in Paperback by Krause Publications (October, 1995)
Author: Gerry Blair
Average review score:

Predator Calling by Gerry Blair
Very well written and gives a plethera of details and information on how to be successful at calling in predators. My success went up several fold after reading and following Mr Blairs recommendations, he obviously has a lot of experience and the ability to relate those to the reader well, along with his wry mirth. The book contains information on coyotes, bobcats, cougar, bear, and some of the smaller predators. A must read book for the varmint hunter or anyone who would like to call in predators just for watching. Highly recommend this book.

Reducing Employee Theft
Published in Hardcover by Quorum Books (30 July, 1991)
Authors: Neil H. Snyder, O. Whitfield Broome, William J. Kehoe, James T. McIntyre, and Karen E. Blair
Average review score:

A fantastic resource;growing epidemic of workplace theft
My interest in the topic of workplace theft began, unexpectedly, after a recent outbreak of crime in my office. As a federal employee, I had always considered myself immune to the disruptive impact of workplace theft. That naivete ended when I became seperated with some objects of high sentimental value. Confused and distraught, I looked for some answer to this violation and began to research the available literature. Neil Snyder's book was the first one I discovered, and his writing proved to be especially supportive and helpful. His chapters explained the risks, the statistics, and essentially lifts the wool from over your eyes to reveal that the successful workplace is a defensive workplace. I have since formed a watchgroup and a worplace preparedness commission to help institute Snyder's and others teachings about this very important topic. A must read for anyone concerned with their safety while on the job.
